“Of the Days of Innocence” -Another short story by K.D.S.

Here’s another story clip I wrote at the same time as the “New England Snows” one.  I wrote it for the same group that requested my first one.  It has the same characters as the first one, but I re-wrote it a bit to create a different scenario.  Still unaltered from my original draft, enjoy!

Koyoto Shadow is 18 years old, a college Freshman. Yae Serenity is 22 years old, a college Senior.  They start the new school year, meet and becomes friends.  Koyoto has a crush on her, but can’t admit it to her.  She thinks him like a little brother.  He becomes her confindante and they talk to each other about all their problems.  Yae’s friends keep asking her why she talks to “a little kid”.  One day, a new senior shows up.  Yae’s friends tell her to go out with him.  She talks to Koyoto about it, and he tells her to do what she wants while it tears him up inside.  She reluctantly agrees to go out with the guy.  One day Koyoto sees Yae kiss the guy.  Koyoto yells at Yae and storms off.  He sulks under a bridge, throwing stones in the water.  He keeps saying aloud that he’s worthless, his life is over, and questions what Yae could ever see in him.  He is cursing the world and crying, so he doesn’t notice Yae standing behind him.  She’s crying.  Suddenly she hugs him from behind.  Koyoto is shocked to even see her again, let alone hug her. Snow began to fall…

Yae: “Why…did you do that, Koyoto?  Why did you yell?” Tears were rolling down her face.
Koyoto: He stared at the water. “Because, I…” He turned red. “Because…I fell in love with you…”
Yae: “?!”
Koyoto: “I fell in love with you since the first day I saw you…and I saw you kiss that guy and I just couldn’t take it…” Koyoto puts his hands to his face.
Yae: “I’m…sorry Koyoto. I didn’t want…to hurt you…”
Koyoto: “I know…who wants to talk to a “little kid” anyway…”
Yae: “I do…”
Koyoto: “You should just do like your friends tell you and don’t talk to “little kids”…I’m just some silly kid…”
Yae: “I can’t do that, Koyoto…”
Koyoto: “And why not?  It makes good sense.”
Yae: “I couldn’t…”
Koyoto: “Because you didn’t want to hurt me, I know.”
Yae: “Thats not it…”
Koyoto: “?”
Yae gripped Koyoto tighter.
Yae: “I couldn’t…because…I..love you…”
Koyoto: “!?!?!”  Koyoto’s face turned red as an apple.
Yae: “I kept talking to you…and the more I saw you…the more I loved you…I couldn’t keep away…” Koyoto turned around and wiped tears from her eyes.
She put her hands on his face.  Koyoto wrapped his arms around her.  They both leaned in and kissed passionately.  They sat there for hours in that kiss, both refusing to let go of the other, while the snow fell about them…

Koyoto: “No I don’t.”
Yae: “You were always sweet like that…you never would let me say anything bad about myself…”
Koyoto: “Thats not the reason.”
Yae: “?”
Koyoto: “You’re not silly because…” He stared at the water.  He turned even redder.  “Because I…”
Yae: “?”
Koyoto: “Because…” He could hardly get it out. “Because I fell in love with you…”
Yae: “Really?!”
Koyoto: “Yeah, I fell in love with you since the first day I saw you.  I couldn’t tell you…I was afraid you’d say I’m some silly kid and tell me to go away…”
Yae: She put her hands on Koyoto’s face and turned him toward her.  “Of course not!”
They wrapped their arms around each other.  They both leaned in and kissed passionately.  They sat there for hours in that kiss, both refusing to let go of the other, while the snow fell about them…

[Resume story pattern]
The next year they moved in together in an apartment.  Yae had graduated and had gotten a job as cook in a restaurant and would work there until Koyoto graduated.  Afterwards, they would get married.

Yae: “I’m off to work, dear!”
Koyoto: “Bye…” He tried to say it. “..Honey..” He turned red.
Yae: “You’re so cute when you’re like that!” She kissed him. Koyoto turned even redder.  “Well, aren’t you gonna kiss me goodbye?”
Koyoto: He turned red as an apple. “Ok…” They kissed.
Yae: “Ok! Bye, dear!  And since it’s our aniversary, you’ll get something SPECIAL when you get home!”
Koyoto: Koyoto turned blood red. “Uh, what did you have in mind?”
Yae: She put two fingers to her lips and them pressed them on Koyoto’s. “WELL, you’ll just have to wait and see!”  A sweatdrop ran down Koyoto’s face.

Koyoto was looking around the jewelry store.  Yae and him had been by there before, and she had talked about how she wanted a ring they had.  It was pretty but simple, a silver ring with a very small stone in the middle.  Koyoto had saved for the whole year (minus rent money) to buy the ring.  He opened his wallet, and all that was in it was a I O U note from Sasuke.
Koyoto: “NO! Sasuke!!! You didn’t!!!”
He ran around frantically for hours searching for Sasuke.  It got late, and dark, and Koyoto gave up.  He trudged back to the apartment.
Koyoto: “Now…she’ll probably break up with me for this!  I won’t ever be able to forgive Sasuke!…it’s not his fault…he borrows money all the time…I should have told him not too…now…I screwed up our aniversary…I’ll never forgive myself!”
He got to the door and opened it.
Yae: “Hello!”
Yae was dressed in a fancy long red dress. It had ruffles and bows all over it. Koyoto had seen the dress in a store’s window for a VERY steep price. “Oh man…” He thought to himself. “Now I feel even worse! She spent all that money…”
Yae: “Now! For DINNER!” Yae stepped back and Koyoto saw the dinner table was full of food of every variety known to man.  Steaks, roasts, pies, cakes, ALL kinds of food covered the table.
“JESUS!” Koyoto thought to himself. “Now I’m REALLY dead.  She made all this delicious food…for a cheap, pathetic man like me…”
Yae: “Come on, sit down!”
Koyoto tried to smile at her and sat down the table. Yae sat down across from him.
Yae: “What’s wrong? Are you…up to something?  You HIDING something? My PRESENT?” She giggled.
“Crap. I’m dead. Kill me here. Let me DIE.” He thought to himself.
Yae picked up her napkin and there was a small box under it.
Yae: “What’s this?” She opened the box. “OH! MY GOODNESS! It’s so wonderful! I love it Koyoto!” She reached across the table and gave him a big hug.
Koyoto: “?” He thought to himself: “What just happened?” He looked at the box and saw a beautiful ring, much more so than the one at the store. The ring was made of a weave of gold and platinum, with designs etched on it. A large diamond was set in the middle. Koyoto thought, “How did that get there?”
Koyoto looked out the window and Sasuke and Yae’s father standing out there, both giving him a thumbs up. “Those two…”
Koyoto picked up the ring and slipped it on Yae.  She leaned back and they kissed passionately, while the snow fell outside…
